Former Beijing police official charged with bribery

A former senior police officer in charge of building an information system in 2008 to handle traffic management in Beijing has been charged with bribery, according to Beijing No 1 Intermediate Court.

Sui Yagang, former deputy director of the traffic management department under Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, allegedly took bribes of up to 1 million yuan ($160,000), Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

A court hearing was held on Wednesday and a verdict is pending.

Detained by police in June, Sui led work in building the country’s first intelligent traffic management system, which included information on Beijing’s 4.78 million drivers and 3.2 million vehicles in 2008 to helped with traffic law enforcement.

Prosecutors said he accepted bribes between 1998 and 2011 from a company and helped it win contracts for many projects.
