Summer box office revenue seen at $652m
China's box office revenue for the period from June to August is expected to reach about 4 billion yuan ($652 million), according to industry analysts.
Last year, the figure was 4.1 billion yuan for the same period, according to the Shanghai Securities News.
Roughly, more than 50 films will be screened in July and August, including Hollywood blockbusters such as After Earth, Fast & Furious 6 and Pacific Rim, and domestic features like Blind Detective, The Rooftop and the animated film I Love Wolffy 2.
In the first half of the summer, domestic productions performed better than their Hollywood counterparts, but in the next half, there will be more imported films.
Fast & Furious 6 raked in more than 100 million yuan in ticket sales in two days, and other Hollywood productions like Monsters University, slated for release on Aug 23 on the Chinese mainland, are expected to do well in terms of box office revenue.
In the first half of the year, domestic films contributed more than 60 percent of the total box office with 6.5 billion yuan, but it is believed that the advantage won't last throughout summer, one of the busiest seasons of the year for the film market.
