Lifelong accountability for erroneous law enforcement
Police officers in Henan province will be held accountable for erroneous law enforcement for a lifetime, Dahe Daily reported.
Officers must be held accountable for mistakes made during law enforcement, even if they have been transferred to another post or have retired, according to a provincial regulation that goes into effect on Thursday.
Retired officers found responsible for miscarriage of justice will either be relegated or removed from the payroll.
For those who have left the public security department, the department will suggest that the current employer punish the officer.
The Criminal Procedure Law that went into effect in January prohibits forced confession under violence.
Confessions retrieved from suspects through violence typically lead to wrongful verdicts, experts said.
