BEIJING - China and France will celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties with a number of events, senior diplomats said here Friday.

"Both sides will host more than 300 events showcasing the breadth and high level of our bilateral ties," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press conference.

Those events will range from art exhibits, performances and a round table mayoral meeting through sporting and academic competitions between high school students, according to the Culture Ministry.

Wang hailed the importance of China-France relations, saying the two states will further mutual trust, enhance communication and deepen cooperation.

Cultural Minister Cai Wu underlined the cultural link between the two, saying this year's celebration will promote cultural exchange and cooperation.

French ambassador to China Sylvie Bermann said the events will increase the good feelings between the two peoples and strengthen bilateral ties.

China and France established diplomatic relations in 1964, making France the first major Western power to recognize the People's Republic of China.
