Most of the content provided by print publications on their digital platforms are read in China's first-tier cities, said a report on the top 100 digital platforms of print media in the country.

According to the 2013 annual survey conducted by people.com.cn, the official website of People's Daily, prospects for newspapers and magazines vary across different digital platforms.

Nearly all of the 150 Chinese newspapers selected for the poll opened their accounts on Weibo, Chinese Twitter-like social media platform, and WeChat, the Chinese equivalent to Whatsapp, while some international media groups stood out with their digital magazine applications. Fashion, finance and news magazines rank among the top of the list.

The emerging trend of using social media services like WeChat will be more prevalent and offer a profitable future for media, said Shen Yang, professor of the school of information management at Wuhan University.
