Shanghai's railway stations and airports have tightened security checks following Saturday's terrorist attack at Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province.

Shanghai's railway police have raised security to its highest level with armed police on patrol. In addition to stepping up security checks at entrances, police also carried out spot checks on passengers.

Enhanced security checks are also in place at the city's Hongqiao and Pudong airports, where passengers are asked to open carry-on luggage for inspections more frequently, according to a security staff member at Hongqiao International Airport.

In Shanghai's public places, especially those that attract large crowds, the city has also ordered stricter anti-terrorist checks, police said.
