The driver of a blood donation vehicle in Chenzhou, Hunan province, donated blood to a woman for 19 months to allow her to give birth to healthy twins, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
Liu Jianbo, a driver working for the city' central blood station, learned in November 2011 that a resident named Duan Jia (not her real name) suffered a rare autoimmune disease that caused her to have repeated miscarriages.
Doctors said a miscarriage could be avoided if Duan was provided with immune cells from a suitable healthy adult through blood transfusions on a monthly basis.
Liu, the driver, turned out be a valid candidate.
He started to donate blood for the woman in December 2011 and donated 19 times in the following 19 months. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to twins in September 2013.
The twins and their mother are in healthy condition, as is Liu.
