The Taiyuan police broke up a gang they said was perpetrating telecom frauds and captured 34 suspects involved in 118 frauds across 27 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
The suspects collectively cheated people out of 5 million yuan ($805,000), Sanjin Metropolis Daily reported on Thursday.
A local resident, surnamed Liu, reported to police last December that she had been cheated out of 290,000 yuan ($46,690) in one scheme.
After a monthlong investigation, police caught the suspects on Jan 9 in Hefei, Anhui province, confiscating equipment and other items, including computers, credit cards and fraud-training books.
The suspects had offered false stock trading information, the authorities said. Further investigation is ongoing.
