A hospital in Xiaoxian county, Anhui province, has been ordered to pay 300,000 yuan ($48,151) compensation in a case in which a couple was diagnosed with AIDS after the wife received a transfusion at the hospital, Anhui Commercial Daily reported on Monday.

Named Xu Lan (not her real name), the woman received a transfusion of 400 ml of blood at the county's People's Hospital on Oct 14, 1995, and was diagnosed with AIDS on May 26, 2008.

On June 20, her husband Liu Lin (not his real name) was also diagnosed with the disease and Xu died of the disease on July 28 that same year. From 2012, Liu’s condition worsened and he filed a lawsuit against the hospital.

The county court ordered the hospital to pay the money to Liu in July 2012, but the hospital appealed. Recently, the provincial high court dismissed that appeal and upheld the original judgment.
