KUNMING - Two forest fires in Shangri-La, a resort county in southwest China's Yunnan Province, have been contained after spreading across an area of 1,600 mu (106.7 hectares).

About 5,000 firefighters and soldiers had been mobilized after the fires broke out on Monday and Tuesday afternoon, said an official with the forest fire control headquarters of Deqen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which administers Shangri-La.

As of 5 pm on Wednesday, the blaze in Jiefang Village of Jiantang Township has been put out. Another fire in Heping Village of Xiaozhongdian Township was contained at around 5 pm on Thursday, but 2,800 firefighters are still battling it at two spots to finally extinguish it.

The windy weather had hampered their efforts, said the official.

The causes of the fires are being investigated.
