A Chinese chess set made of clay has been unearthed in Funing county, Hebei province, China News Service reported on Tuesday.

The chess set was found on May 5 during repair work on the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in the county’s Banchang valley scenic area. The clay pieces are divided into two opposing sides in black and yellow and carved with Chinese characters in the Ming Dynasty style.

Archaeologists said the chess set is believed to have been made by soldiers guarding the Great Wall in ancient times.
