Thirty-six litchis from Gaozhou, Guangdong province, were auctioned for 40,772 yuan ($6,549) on a commercial website recently, Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Thursday.

The fruits were produced by a tree that is believed to be 1,300 years old and planted in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), with fruits from the tree sent to Yang Guifei, a much-favored imperial concubine of the Tang Dynasty who very much liked to eat litchis.

In 2014, farmers in Gaozhou first sold their litchis online and the rare fruits were also auctioned online for the first time.
