Administration suspends Nanjing wall project

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage has ordered the suspension of a project to alter the city wall in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, which is a highlighted site of the city's attractions.

The city planned to construct a gate building for the wall near Taipingmen in Xuanwu district, but started the project without receiving approval from the administration.

The cultural heritage administration has ordered Nanjing to repair destroyed parts of the wall to their original appearance, which did not include a gate in that spot.

The ancient city wall has been listed as a key cultural relic under State protection since 1988.
