Tianjin will implement the odd-and-even-number license plate rules on days when an air-pollution red alert is issued, according to a contingency plan that was passed on Monday to fight heavy air pollution, Xinhua News Agency reported.

This means 50 percent of the automobiles in the city will be banned from roads on heavy pollution days.

Outdoor events and activities related to construction work also will be suspended on such days, according to the plan.

Additionally, preschools as well as primary and middle schools across the city should suspend classes, and a flexible work schedule should be implemented in enterprises and institutes on these days, the plan says.
