Guangdong police crack down on prostitution

Police across Guangdong province detained 3,033 suspects by June 10 after they investigated 1,121 cases involving prostitution, a statement from the Guangdong provincial department of public security said on Thursday.

The suspects included 1,497 prostitution operators, organizers and beneficiaries.

The police also busted 214 gangs that organize prostitution in the southern province, which borders Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, the statement released on Thursday sad.

As part of a special campaign launched on February 10 to fight prostitution, police in 21 prefecture-level cities have inspected more than 947,000 entertainment venues and 1,200 pornographic websites in the past four months.

The campaign found 3,553 entertainment venues were involved in prostitution or violated relevant laws and regulations. These entertainment venues, including sauna houses, KTV halls, karaoke bars, beauty salons, foot massage centers and have been shut down, or temporarily closed for improvement, the statement said.
