KUNMING -- A former university president in southwest China's Yunnan Province stood trial Thursday for bribery charges, a local court said on Friday.

Zhen Chaodang, former president of Yunnan Minzu University, was accused of taking bribes worth more than 7.4 million yuan ($1.2 million) from multiple companies and individuals, according to the Intermediate People's Court of Chuxiong Prefecture.

The bribes included 7.1 million yuan and 10,000 euros in cash as well as a Buick car, the prosecutors said.

The prosecutors said evidence showed Zhen had sought benefits for those who bribed him.

The court has not announced a verdict yet.
