A farmer in Jia county, Henan province looks despondently at a field where seeds have failed to sprout due to drought, Aug 5, 2014. Henan has been experiencing high temperatures and a severe lack of rain, with many parts of the province suffering from widespread drought. Jia county is suffering its worst drought since 1961, with 21 of 22 reservoirs dried up, 13 rivers cut off and the underground water level dropping more than 15 meters. The drought has caused 232 million yuan ($37.6 million) worth of economic losses to the county and 109,000 residents are having difficulties getting drinking water. [Photo/Xinhua] |
