A mother of newborn quadruplets in Gaozhou, Guangdong province, lost 50,000 yuan ($8,139) of donations in a telephone fraud on Saturday and received a new 10,000 yuan donation from the Gaozhou People's Hospital on Wednesday.
After Wu Danli from Tianxin village was discharged from hospital with her surviving three quadruplets on Saturday, she received a phone call saying she was eligible for a 12,500 yuan financial subsidy.
Wu dialed another phone number as requested by the caller, who asked her to follow instructions over the phone at an ATM at a nearby bank.
A bank worker, hearing Wu's side of the phone conversation, warned her against fraud but Wu ignored the warning, only to find 50,000 yuan had disappeared from her account after she followed the instructions.
The 50,000 yuan was withdrawn in 18 seconds, and Wu called the police with the help of bank staff.
