A woman suspected of poisoning her boyfriend stood trial at Wuhan Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday, Changjiang Daily reported.

The suspect, 34, surnamed Xiao, is accused of murdering her boyfriend at her home in November 2013, according to prosecutors.

Xiao allegedly made an online purchase of tetrodotoxin, the poison normally found in blowfish, and mixed it with yogurt and sleeping pills. On Nov 11, Xiao's boyfriend, surnamed Liu, was invited to her home. He ate the yogurt which was left in the refrigerator and died.

Xiao allegedly told the police that she realized Liu might drink the poisonous yogurt after complaining that he was feeling sleepy and dizzy.

She claimed that after Liu complained of dizziness, she also fell into a deep sleep until midday and found him dead.

Xiao waited for a week before calling the police. During that time she kept Liu's body at home and dressed him daily. She also used his phone to send messages to his relatives and colleagues, indicating that he was still alive.

Xiao studied in Germany after achieved a master's degree in China. She met Liu after she returned to China and found a job in the company Liu worked for in 2012. Their relationship worsened when Xiao became pregnant, the report said.

According to Liu's brother-in-law, Liu was unhappy at discovering that Xiao had hidden a previous marriage from him. He also complained that Xiao had beaten him over trivial matters.

Xiao confirmed the hidden marriage but denied she had beaten Liu.
