More than 80 percent of middle school students in Jiangsu province fail to get enough sleep, according to a survey by the provincial center for disease control and prevention.

The survey, which included 12,810 respondents, showed that 81.1 percent of students aged 13 to 17 sleep less than the recommended nine hours, while 74.2 percent of students aged 6 to 12 sleep less than the recommended 10 hours a night.

It also showed that 16.2 percent of adults in the province sleep less than seven hours a day.

Dai Yue, deputy director of the food safety and evaluation institution under the center for disease control and prevention, said lack of sleep can affect students’ physical and brain development, and may increase the incidence of high blood pressure among adults.
