Blasts leave 2 dead in Xinjiang

Multiple explosions in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region have left two dead and several injured, Xinjiang-based news portal ts.cn reported Monday.

At around 5 pm on Sunday, blasts went off outside a shop in downtown Luntai county, in Yangxia town and in a village within Luntai, in Beyinguoleng Mongolian autonomous prefecture of Xinjiang.

Luntai county is in central Xinjiang, 360 kilometers (220 miles) southwest of the capital, Urumqi.

The Public security officers quickly handled the situation, according to the report which gives no details.

The injured have been sent to hospitals. An investigation has been launched into the explosions.

The latest blast came after a terrorist gang attacked a police station and government buildings in Shache county near Kashgar in July, killing 37 people before police shot dead 59 of the attackers.

Seventeen officials in Kashgar prefecture were announced on Sunday to have received punishment to take administrative responsibility for the attack.

He Limin, Party chief of Shache, was removed from his post and Ahat Shayit, head of the county, received a severe warning. The head of the county's public security bureau was also removed from the post.
