GUANGZHOU - South China's Guangdong Province reported 888 new cases of Dengue on Friday.

The number continues rising with the total number of cases reaching 9,161, according to the provincial disease control and prevention center.

Three people died from the disease, two of whom were in Guangzhou where 7,747 cases were reported, while the other in adjacent Foshan city, where 950 cases were confirmed, the center said.

A spokesman from the center told Xinhua that now is a peak time for outbreak of dengue fever. All citizens in the province are taking self-protective measure against mosquitoes and eradicating mosquitoes to prevent dengue fever.

But he said it is possible Guangdong may see more new cases in the upcoming week-long National Day holiday, which would also increase the risks of more cases resulting in serious conditions or even death.

South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region also confirmed 34 dengue fever cases this year, and no death case was reported, the local health authorities said on Friday.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that affects between 50 and 100 million people in tropical and subtropical regions every year, causing fever and muscle and joint aches.
