A Yantai court sentenced two people to death and one to life in prison on Saturday for the beating and murder of a woman inside a McDonald's in Shandong province after failing to recruit her into their cult earlier this year.
Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong were given to death penalty for murder and using a cult to undermine the implementation of law, according to the verdict issued by Yantai Intermediate People's Court.
Lyu Yingchun was given the life imprisonment for homicide and undermining the implementation of law.
The two other defendants related to the murder Zhang Hang, was given ten years in prison for homicide and Zhang Qiaolian, seven years in prison.
On May 28, the five defendants beat Wu Shuoyan to death at a McDonald's in Zhaoyuan, Shandong province, after Wu refused to give them her telephone number. The five defendants were attempting to recruit Wu into their cult called the Church of Almighty God.
When the five defendants stood trial on August 21, Zhang Fan denied the charges of murder. Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong showed no repentance during the trial and at one point, they smiled.
