SHANGHAI - The driver of a tour bus, which crashed and left six passengers dead and 43 hospitalized in Shanghai on Monday, was bending down to pick up his cellphone when the accident happened, police said Thursday.
The 55-seat bus overturned around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Donghai Avenue and Nengyuan Road near the Yangshan Deep-water Port on the island of Yangshan.
The initial investigation found that it was the driver's loss of attention that resulted in the bus crashing into rocks and rolling over, according to police.
The driver, who sustained slight injures, has been detained on suspicion of causing traffic casualties.
The bus, which was heading to Shengsi county, Zhejiang province, is owned by Xinlianyi Travel Transportation Company, a subsidiary of Shanghai Bashi Company.
The investigation continues.
