Top quality rice worth 200,000 yuan ($32,500) has been donated to the disabled people of Beijing from producers and business communities of Wuchang, Northeast China's Heilongjiang province. The move, which aims to raise awareness for the vulnerable community, was made ahead of International Day of Disabled Persons on Wednesday.

The rice will be given to the Beijing Foundation for Disabled Persons for further distribution. More than one million disabled Beijing citizens will benefit from the Wuchang rice, which is famous for its distinctive aroma and is considered some of China's best.

"Our care toward disabled people might look as tiny as a rice grain, but with the help of more and more people, we can fill up a full barn," said Xin Minchao, Wuchang's municipal Party secretary, at the donation ceremony, co-hosted by Beijing Foundation for Disabled Persons and Wuchang municipal government on Monday.

"Everyone can contribute to charity. Every heart should be inspired to pay attention to the voices of disabled people," he added.

Xin said that supporting people with disabilities should become the responsibility of every member of society.

Zhang Liang, secretary-general of the Beijing Foundation for Disabled Persons, said the organization will come up with a fair arrangement to distribute the rice as soon as possible.

In a bid to secure the reputation of Wuchang rice, producers and the local government also vowed to set standards and crack down on counterfeits at the event.
