The Public Security Bureau in Chengdu released the burglary data for 2014 on Thursday, showing that thieves consider apartments their ideal targets and nights are their preferred time, according to West China City Daily on Friday.

There were 15,196 burglary cases in Chengdu from Jan 1 to Nov 30, of which 51.5 percent happened in apartments.

In 44.1 percent of the cases burglars chose entering the apartment from the door and 47.9 percent from the window.

According to the statistics, burglars prefer entering the houses to steal at night and 10:00 pm to 3:00 am is the busiest period for them, especially around 11 pm.

Though most of the residential buildings or communities are equipped with community property management and surveillance, weak management and bad application of the surveillance equipment gave burglars a window of opportunity.

Since office workers usually have a fixed activity pattern, the burglars chose the periods between 10:30 am to 11:30 am and 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm to burgle a house when the owners were at work.

According to the police, in most burglary cases, the doors are not double locked. "Many residents think it won't happen to them, so they only single lock their main door, which is very dangerous," said a police officer.
