A man sentenced to death for multiple crimes, including raping and murdering a woman in 1996 - a crime for which an innocent man was wrongly executed - has appealed, the Intermediate People's Court in Hohhot announced on Thursday.

Zhao Zhihong was convicted of 21 crimes between 1996 and 2005 in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, including killing 10 people and raping 13 women and girls.

Zhao confessed to a rape and murder case in a public toilet in Hohhot in 1996 when he was detained in 2005, a case that was falsely pinned on Hugjiltu, who was later executed. Hugjiltu was declared innocent in December 2014.

Serial rapist and murderer Zhao Zhihong, who was behind the crimes for which an innocent man was executed, was sentenced to death for murder, rape, robbery and theft, at Hohhot Intermediate People's Court Monday.

Zhao was also fined 53,000 yuan ($ 8474), in addition to 10,2768 yuan fine by the civil plaintiff.

Parents of Huugjilt,a wrongfully convicted and executed young man, were invited to the trial.
