Beijing police arrested 180 people suspected of drug-related crimes at entrances of the city, such as airports and customs, from January to March, up 7.5 percent year-on-year, the municipal public security bureau said on Thursday.

The capital has made achievements in drug control since the beginning of this year, confiscating at least 6.35 kilograms of drugs, a rise of 25 percent year-on-year, according to the bureau.

"The crackdowns at airports, customs and bus stations can effectively alleviate the influences of drugs in the city," the bureau said in a statement, adding it will continue to fight against drugs from the roots.

Beijing customs officers, for example, found a foreign man who intended to enter China with drugs in February after an investigation and paid more attention to his luggage during a security check on Feb 10, according to a statement provided by the bureau.

Police found 1.36 kilograms of cocaine in his suitcases and the man is now in detention in Beijing's Haidian district, the statement said.

On March 5, the police detained a man surnamed Qian, 21, from Yunnan province, who allegedly transported drugs between Beijing and his hometown several times, carryingmore than 336 grams of heroin on those trips, it added.
