Falling rocks kill 1 in Tibet

The devastating 8.1-magnitude quake on April 25 had claimed more than 8,000 lives in Nepal as of Sunday, and left 26 dead in Tibet, southwest China.

On Tuesday morning, the authorities in Tibet sent vehicles loaded with relief supplies to areas of northern Nepal that were hit badly by the quake.

The relief supplies cost 6 million yuan ($980,790) and include 500 tents, 5,000 carpets, 1,000 collapsible beds, 50 tons of rice and 4,000 boxes of bottled water.

By 5 pm on Monday, 57,318 people and 2,500 vehicles in Xigaze had been involved in quake relief in Tibet, according to a report released by the Tibet earthquake relief headquarters.

All blocked roads have been reopened to traffic, and communication services have returned to normal.

Thirteen medical teams were sent to affected areas to provide free medical treatment, and 19 medical rescue sites were set up, according to the report.

More than 16,900 people have been treated or had checkups, and medical supplies costing more than 1.72 million yuan have been distributed, it said.

More than 1,300 quake victims in Gyirong, a town in Gyirong county, Tibet, have been vaccinated to prevent infectious diseases.

Ninety-four patients were admitted to hospitals, with 56 of them treated and discharged. Six have severe injuries, the report said.

The magnitude-7.9 quake in Nepal jolted parts of Tibet, including Xigaze and Ali prefecture, leaving 26 people dead, three missing and 856 injured, Xinhua News Agency reported.

About 2,700 houses were toppled and nearly 40,000 houses and monasteries damaged, according to the report.

A total of 63,989 evacuees have been provided with accommodations, safe food and water supplies and medical treatment, the report said.
