A farmer in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province bought a Porsche on Taobao during the nation's Singles Day shopping spree on Wednesday, according to a report by Wenzhou Metropolitan News

He made a down payment of 500,000 yuan ($78,550) for a Porsche Macan a day earlier on cun.taobao.com, an online-shopping platform specially targeting farmers across the country.

Cun.taobao.com, or Cuntao, characterized by rural service stations, is a strategy announced by e-commerce giant Alibaba after its debut on the New York Stock Exchange in Sept 2014.

The farmer's purchase turned out to be the biggest single deal on Cuntao during the shopping frenzy.

The deal was done at a rural service station in Zhongzhen village, Wenzhou city in East China's Zhejiang province.

Chen Jing, a member of staff at the station, said they had also seen the purchases of an Audi A7 and an Audi A4 by local farmers through Cuntao.

"Sales at rural service stations in China reached more than 200 million yuan from the midnight to now and it's really a big deal," said Zhang Yong, CEO of Alibaba Group, on Wednesday night.

Last year, per capita disposable income of rural residents increased 9.2 percent annually to10,489 yuan.

Zhongzhen village ranked third among the top 10 biggest spending villages on Taobao over the shopping spree.

The top two are in East China's Jiangsu province and eight of the top 10 are in East China, showing Alibaba's rural strategy still has long way to go.
