NANJING - A former admissions official at a prestigious Chinese university confessed to taking a huge amount of bribes during trial on Thursday.

The hearing of Cai Rongsheng, former head of the admission office at Beijing-based Renmin University, was held at the intermediate people's court in Nanjing, capital city of East China's Jiangsu province.

Procurators accused Cai of accepting bribes worth 23.3 million yuan ($3.64 million) to help students get enrolled or change majors between 2005 and 2013.

Cai was put under investigation in late 2013 and arrested in May, 2014.
