In November 2009, Barack Obama arrived in Shanghai as the first stop of his first visit to China as US president. Other leaders, including British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande, have visited the city since 2013.
The country's financial hub also hosted summits of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2001 and 2006. In 2014, it hosted the fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, attended by the heads of countries including Russia, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Iran.
