Families that lost their only child

The field was studied by the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

What it is about: The central committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy delivered a proposal at the meeting of the country's top political advisory body last year, asking to raise the financial assistance to families that lost their only child. It asked to set up a foundation to care for these families, and gather the funds from government and public institutions, as well as donations from all kinds of companies.

Feedback: The National Health and Family Planning Commission delivered a written reply. According to the commission, by the end of 2012, a total of 3.409 billion yuan had been issued to these families, benefiting a total of 720,000 people. Regional governments also raised their subsidies and explored better ways to help them while sticking to national policy on helping families losing their only son or daughter.

The commission said it is working with relevant departments to roll out policies to help these families make a living, receive medical help and receive proper care when families members turn old.
