China calls on all countries involved in the Korean Peninsula to exercise calm and restraint, and say and do things that will help resume the Six-Party Talks, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

Wang made the remarks at a news conference in Beijing on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

"The situation in the Korean Peninsula is basically stable. And China has played a constructive role in bringing it about," Wang said.

The Six-Party Talks, which involve the Republic of Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, China, the United States, Russia and Japan, were initiated in Beijing in August 2003 but have been halted since December 2008.

"We cherish our traditional friendship with the DPRK and we seek the normal development of our relations. It should not, and will not, be affected by temporary events," Wang said.

As to when the leaders of both countries will meet, it will have to suit the convenience of both sides, the minister said.
