The latest is Disney's first theme park on the Chinese mainland, Shanghai Disney Resort, which opened last month.

Another 2,500 parks have been planned.

Universal Studios will open an $8 billion Hollywood theme park in Beijing in 2019.

Chinese firms are also entering the business in a big way.

Dalian Wanda Group recently unveiled a plan to build 15 Wanda Cities by 2020.

However, there is a cautionary note from the Qian-zhan consultants - they say almost 80 percent of parks built in the past 10 years have gone bankrupt.

Meanwhile, Beijing's Miyun International Amusement Park has been converted to a convention center.
