12 Chinese universities among best in research
Twelve Chinese universities are ranked in the Top 100 in academic research, with Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University in the Top 50, the annual QS World University Rankings revealed.
According to the list, China is ranked second in terms of research capacity in higher education, just following the US, with 36 universities on the list. The 12 higher education institutions include seven from mainland China, three in Taiwan, and two in Hong Kong.
Tsinghua University is ranked at a record high, No. 24 on the list, along with Hong Kong University at No.27, surpassing the University of California, Berkeley, which is No. 28. Tsinghua's listing marks the second time since 2006 that a Chinese university has placed in the world's Top 25.
Indicators on the list show the progress of scientific products and the impact Chinese universities have made in the past five years. Some Chinese universities have even ranked higher over the elite UK universities: the University of Science and Technology of China and Zhejiang University ranked higher in the sphere over Cambridge University and Nanjing University over Oxford University.
"The Chinese government has long made a strategic investment in education, innovation and bold reform, which laid the solid foundation of the success of Chinese universities overall rising in the world," said Dr. Christina Zhang Yan, China Director of QS. China building world-class universities has made some achievements, and the gap between the top world-class universities is now shrinking. However, more than just advancing in research and innovation as world-class universities, China should actively attract the best talent worldwide, especially those with prestigious experience in human resources management overseas."
