How Spring Festival is being redefined
Extended family photos are not unusual in traditional Chinese families, but one this size is no ordinary feat. About 500 descendents of the same ancestor squeezed into a super-size family photo at a village in Shengzhou, a county-level city in East China's Zhejiang province, during the Spring Festival holiday. From the 25th to 31st generation, they were among 1,000 people surnamed Shi who reunited on Jan 31, 2017 in their hometown to celebrate their shared history and genealogy. [Photo/VCG] |
Nostalgia prevails in life and online
Humans are nostalgic by nature, particularly when standing at a turning point like Spring Festival. Hence, many people's efforts to greet the new with 'old buddies'.
In a day when digital cameras have been almost replaced by mobile phones, many people in China took to social media to share old photos taken on film during previous years' holidays.
Some recalled happy days with old friends by comparing photos taken of the same people in the present and past in the same place. Some spoke of changing times by showing a group of family photos taken at different ages.
Thanks to modern photography and the internet, we also saw an astonishingly super-sized family photo taken this year.
