He Jiacheng, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Governance, was convicted of bribery and sentenced to 9 years by a court in East China’s Zhejiang province on Tuesday.

He was also fined 700,000 yuan. His illegal gains were confiscated and turned over to the State, according to Ningbo city Intermediate People’s Court in Zhejiang province.

According to the court, he used his office to benefit others in business and with promotions between 1995 and 2014.

The court said he accepted bribes worth 7.1 million yuan ($1.03 million) paid in cash or in other property for himself or other family members.

The court issued a relatively lenient punishment because he actively confessed his crimes and his illicit assets were returned. He also offered information on other possible criminal cases.
