Creativity and invention forum opens in Beijing

2002-05-24
Xinhua

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on May 23 opened the second International Forum on Creativity and Invention, which aims to improve intellectual property awareness around the world.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Jingchuan, commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), said that the forum would help governments wisely handle issues of intellectual property protection.

Technological innovation should be oriented to the market, Wang said.

Effective protection for intellectual property and a sound legal environment would benefit further technological innovation, he said.

Rita Hayes, deputy director-general of the WIPO, said that intellectual property should be well safeguarded to encourage creativity and invention.

With the theme of "A better future for humanity in the 21st century", the forum includes topics such as innovation and creativity, the role of creators, intellectual property in the modern era, international intellectual property mechanisms, and invention and commercial competition.

About 250 intellectual property officials, experts and inventors participated in the three-day forum.
