Women comprise about 38.8 per cent of China's urban employees and 65.6 per cent of rural labourers.

Of all urban women, 85 per cent work.

The mortality rate for pregnant women has decreased from 76.5 per 100,000 in 1992 to 53 per 100,000 in 2000.

The average expected life-span for women is 73.33 years old.

All 31 provinces and autonomous regions of the Chinese mainland have women in senior official positions.

There are 7,300-odd non-governmental women's organizations active around the country.
