Chinese bank donates to Red Cross

2005-12-30
Xinhua

China Construction Bank (CCB) on Wednesday donated 3 million yuan (366,000 U.S. dollars) to the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) to supporting charity programs.

The bank also signed an agreement with RCSC to issue its debit card called "Dragon Card" to members of RCSC nationwide soon.

The cooperation is a meaningful approach of financial institutions and charity organizations in the public welfare sector, said CCB president Chang Zhenming at the donation ceremony.

The 3 million yuan will be spent in five years in support of the youth work of RCSC. The commission charged in use of the bank card will be returned to RCSC, according to Chang.

RCSC president Peng Peiyun received the donation on behalf of RCSC and conferred a medal to mark the donation to CCB.

The cooperation will provide more opportunities to the development of China's Red Cross drive, said RCSC vice president Jiang Yiman, hoping that more Chinese companies to make contribution in this regard.

As one of the four major state commercial banks in China, CCB was listed on Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited in October this year. It is the first state bank to set foot in China's red cross charity programs.
