Hutong Bar: also a teahouse (CityWeekend) Updated: 2006-05-23 13:56
Hutong Bar is hidden deep inside the maze of Nanluoguxiang's ancient
alley ways. You can find this little two story gem by keeping an eye out for the
glow of red lanterns hanging off its roof. This space is quiet and understated,
showcasing an eclectic collection of Chinese knick-knacks such as bright kites
and a Buddha sculpture. The bar even serves as a shrine, of sorts, to hutong
culture. Wooden candle holders are etched with the names of hutongs in the area
and photographs of the same hutongs line the walls.
Opposite the bar counter, behind sheer curtains, cushy sofas wait to comfort
weary travelers. A set of extremely steep steps lead to an upstairs filled with
broad wooden tables. During the day, natural light floods the area making it a
nice day spot for reading. At night, soft music fills the bar making it a cozy
place to sit and chat. Cocktails average RMB 50 and there's an assortment of
teas from around China, all personally bought by the tea-fanatic owners.
