In Uzbekistan, the ancient city of Bukhara was once a large commercial center on the Great Silk Road linking international trade between the Middle East and China. Here in Shanghai, Bukhara is a three-story haven bringing together lovers of Indian food.

To mention just two of the dishes we sampled: the mutton badami pasanda (mutton cubes in rich, almond-flavored white gravy, RMB 65) and murg kali mirch (boneless chicken cooked in tangy sauce, RMB 55) were both fitting tributes to the glory of this restaurant's namesake. In a word, glorious; the meat was tender, and the sauces absolutely flavorful.

Although the accompanying rice was overcooked, we still thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and the service, which was attentive and friendly.

Another accompaniment, however, the delightful Indian music, adds to what was, in sum, a very pleasant dining experience indeed.
