A destination to head for
(That's Beijing)
Updated: 2006-08-07 09:07

Four years ago, Zeta Bar opened at the Park Lane Hilton in London, consequently turning the conservative, formal, staid image of the generic hotel bar on its head.

Zeta's success owed much to the fact it was a bar that was designed, built and run as a separate entity to the hotel as a whole, predominantly relying on external custom rather than catering for the simple needs of its transient guests. Zeta has since opened in Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Bangkok and, most recently, Beijing.

Good news then, for those who have exhausted the scant lounge options Beijing has to offer. While Beijing stalwart Centro is considered a place to start the evening, Hilton F&B Manager Chris Roberts hopes Zeta will be a destination to head for. Aedas, the Hong Kong-based interior design firm, ensures that Zeta boasts style in abundance. Chrome cages that house the extensive drinks selection hang from the high ceiling and the bar is finished in immaculate white, while the seating can only be described as turn of the century. Next century that is.

The minimalist design continues to the drinks menu, which simply lists wine (RMB 45-75 per glass), vodka (prices TBD), cocktails (RMB 70-80) and champagne (prices TBD). A balcony area can be hired out for private parties, as can the "show box," complete with an expansive glass banquet table headed by an opulent art-nouveau sofa. This, says Roberts, makes it clear that Zeta is exclusively for everyone, confirmed by the welcome absence of private rooms.
