Clubbers in wonderland

Once upon a time, in the history of electronic dance music, clubbers only had a handful of places to go out to soothe their souls in Beijing. While the city has becoming a major stop for international super-star DJs, it's always the super-clubs with flashy lights, shrunken dance floors, overpriced drinks and door charges that book the legendary turntable masters.

The recent launch of White Rabbit Club offers an antithesis to the super-club. Presented as Beijing's new "underground" club, White Rabbit is truly beneath the surface. Literally and figuratively speaking, this new venue is purely subterranean. The cement stairwells of the two-story club lead downward to its basement and sub-basement levels. A fair number of cocktail tables and sofas outline the floors, with stage areas designed for tag-team DJs.

The straight-forward design of the club is made for electronic music lovers with a non-stop nocturnal passion for dancing. The understated decor centers all attention on the music and the patrons. You won't find any smoke and mirrors or disco balls at White Rabbit. Rather, you're more likely to find the best beats the city has to offer.

Its opening weekend featured some of the city's finest and most celebrated DJs, making the aim of this new club quite obvious. The two full bars and roomy dance floors received hundreds of Beijing's nightlife fans with ease at the club's launch party on September 21st. Collective drum and bass DJs from the Syndicate crew stormed the first level dance floor, while house DJ Patrick Yu and tech-house DJ Ludo V kept things hot on the second floor.

The seismic celebration continued in full force throughout the weekend. The once-rotating monthly Bai Cai party landed on the following night, with another raging party lined up for this Friday.

From the looks of things, Beijing's premiere DJs and discriminate party-goers have found themselves a new home sweet home. At long last, underground electronic music has ceased to float from party to party and venue to venue. It's finally safe to follow the White Rabbit - a burrow's been dug.
