Southeast Asian emphasizing East

(City Weekend)

This self-proclaimed Thai restaurant tries to remedy the K. Wah Center's corporate feel with an inviting interior. Satin linens and themed murals aside, we were most struck by Surya's comprehensive 25-page menu, which guided us through dishes like braised abalone, shark's fin soup and bird's nest novelties infused with tropical flavors.

In other words, the kitchen creates Southeast Asian flavors with the emphasis on 'East'. The braised prawn with pumpkin and curry (RMB 128), for example, was delicious, but we were surprised by the 'Chinese-via-Japan' style yellow-brown curry.

In short, if you are looking for a Thai-style meal that's familiar enough for your Shaoxing mother-in-law, then Surya is your choice.
