Beijing's first citywide water quality early warning system begins trial operations on Friday in a bid to upgrade the supervision of domestic water quality.

As many as 20 water quality monitors installed in key water source areas, including five water collection stations for water supply companies in the city, will be systematically linked to offer real-time reports of water quality.

The system can detect contamination and report it to the water authorities in 15 minutes.
