Laoshan district in Qingdao is on track to become a national hub for e-commerce, a well-known economist said on a recent trip to the city.

During his visit to Laoshan in July this year, Cheng Siwei, former vice-chairman of China's top legislative body, said e-commerce is a key component for Laoshan to realize its dream of becoming a "smart city".

"A capable government, harmonious community, e-commerce and intelligent transportation are the essence of a smart city," he said.
