Radamel Falcao's hopes of playing at the World Cup finals hung by a thread on Thursday after his Ligue 1 club Monaco announced the Colombia striker required surgery on a left knee injury.

Monaco did not elaborate on the length of Falcao's absence, while media reports suggested he could be out for six months.

The tournament in Brazil kicks off in less than five months - on June 12.
