Disqualification from competition for poor academic performance might be effective in forcing athletes to cram for tests, but more positive measures should be taken to guarantee their education, experts said.
According to an analysis recently released by the General Administration of Sport, about 200 young athletes have been disqualified from competing in major domestic events because of low academic scores, and a dozen sports schools have failed annual assessments for competent education since 2010.
The State Council issued a regulation on strengthening athletes' education in 2010, urging local sports governing bodies and sports schools to guarantee adequate academic courses for students undergoing rigorous athletic training.
